Inside Line Promotions – BIXBY, Okla. (March 30, 2021) – Elizabeth Phillips is diversifying herself as a race car driver this year.
The 16-year-old has added winged sprint cars to the mix along with some select starts behind the wheel of a midget to go along with a micro sprint campaign.
The goal is to grow as a driver and to improve week by week and race by race.
“Just making the A Feature and getting quality laps is really our focus each time we hit the track,” she said.
Phillips has made two starts in a 305ci winged sprint car thus far and is doubling that total this weekend with action on Friday at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Okla., and Saturday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla.
“About a month ago was my first 305 start at Red Dirt Raceway,” she said. “It was a little rough. We had some engine problems and turned over. We were stronger during our first race at Creek County Speedway. With it being close to home and running there in a micro sprint I’m more familiar with it.”
Phillips will tackle approximately 20 sprint car races with the Oil Capital Racing Series and other regional competition this year. She also plans on running for the Rookie of the Year Award in the Outlaw division of the POWRi Engler Machine & Tool Micro Sprints.
“We’re shooting for the Rookie of the Year Award,” she said. “We got off to a rough start, but hopefully we can get that turned around in Arkansas in a couple of weeks.
“We’re not running the complete OCRS season, but if we have good finishes and we make as many points as we can it will be feasible to earn Rookie of the Year there as well.”
Additionally, Phillips is working on a midget schedule. It currently entails a handful of races, but could grow depending on her comfort in the race car.
“We’ve talked with Dave Mac Motorsports about possibly doing Illinois Speedweek,” she said. “We’ll figure out a few races and then go from there based on how it shakes out.”
