Sooner Late Model Series
Hughes tops Sooner Late Models at Creek County Speedway
By John Rittenoure - KELLYVILLE, Okla. (June 3, 2022) - Kip Hughes went the distance Friday at Creek County Speedway to became the fourth repeat winner of the 2022 Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series season.
Hughes jumped into the early lead with Jason Redman following. Eddie Tidwell joined the chase moving into third on lap 3. On lap 10 Hayden Ross passed Tidwell for third and the three continued to pace the field for the next 10 laps.
Ross clipped a turn three infield tire on lap 21 trying to pass Redman and both got sideways. Ross recovered quick enough to take over second and Redman followed in third. Hughes continued unchallenged and crossed the finish line with his second victory of the season. Ross and Redman finished second and third with Tidwell fourth and Eddie Martin fifth.
Winning the second heat and a good redraw put Hughes on the pole for the feature.
“We pushed in the heat race and got qualified in,” said Hughes. “We got lucky for once and finally drew (number) one then we had to make our car wide and not screw up.”
Hughes is off to a slower start this season from what he is used to. But the defending champion is ok with that.
“Our goal this year is just to have fun,” Hughes said. “We are not running for points.”

About Sooner Late Model Series
The Sooner Late Model Series was formed in 2016 by Enid Speedway co-promoter Mark Brill. Brill felt there was not many opportunities for late model competitors to race in Oklahoma and the Sooner Late Model Series was formed. Now the series has grown beyond the borders of Oklahoma with events held in the neighboring states of Kansas, Texas and Arkansas as well.
